The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has disputed recent claims regarding the status of the Afari Military Hospital project, insisting that the 500-bed facility is nearly complete and urging the government to expedite its completion.

In a statement issued on June 16, 2026, the party said official records from the Ministry of Defence’s Project Implementation Unit indicate that the hospital reached 92.5 percent completion by September 2024 and 98 percent completion by January 2025. It described suggestions that the project is only about 60 percent complete as inaccurate.

According to the NPP, civil works on the core hospital stood at 97.5 percent, architectural works at 87 percent, support facilities, including staff housing, at 77 percent, roads at 80 percent, and landscaping at 77 percent as of September 2024. The party maintained that only a small portion of the work remains before the facility can be commissioned.

Payment Claims Disputed

The party also challenged assertions by government officials that approximately US$85 million is required before construction can resume.

It stated that available records from both the Ministries of Finance and Defence do not support such a figure.

According to the statement, the original US$180 million loan-financed contract has been fully paid. An additional US$19.3 million, negotiated to cover costs arising from earlier project relocations, has also been settled.

The NPP further explained that of a separate claim initially exceeding US$6.5 million but later negotiated down to US$3 million, US$2.5 million has already been paid, leaving an outstanding balance of US$500,000 owed to the contractor.

Project History

The statement traced the project’s history to 2008, when it was first awarded for construction at Sofoline in Kumasi before being relocated multiple times to its current site at Afari. Physical construction began in 2014.

The party noted that by December 2016, the project was about 40 percent complete, adding that between 2017 and January 2025, completion advanced from roughly 40 percent to 98 percent.

It argued that claims suggesting little or no progress was made during that period are inconsistent with the documented record.

Calls for Completion

The NPP said it wants the hospital completed and operational to serve both the Ghana Armed Forces and residents of the Ashanti Region.

It called on the government to settle the outstanding US$500,000, complete the remaining works, and ensure that any additional payment requests are backed by verifiable documentation before public funds are committed.

Reminder to Party Members

The party also urged its senior members to ensure that public comments reflect verified facts and the party’s official position.

Citing Article 4 of the NPP Constitution, the statement reminded members that disagreements should be addressed through the party’s internal structures rather than through public commentary that contradicts documented records.

The statement was signed by Dr. Anthony Nsiah-Asare, Co-Chair of the NPP Policy Committee on Health. It also listed Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie (MP), Alexander Akwasi Acquah (MP), Dr. Ezekiel Agyekum-Obeng, and Dr. Ekua Amoakoh as contacts for further comments.
