Accra, June 29, 2026 – The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called on the government to take urgent and decisive action to address Ghana’s recurring flooding crisis, accusing the administration of prioritising public relations over effective flood mitigation.

In a statement signed by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the NPP expressed sympathy to thousands of Ghanaians affected by Monday’s floods, which submerged major roads and communities across Accra, including the N1 Highway, Apenkwa, Achimota, Kaneshie, Weija, Spintex, Darkuman Junction and the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange.

The party described the latest flooding as evidence of a worsening national problem, arguing that the same flood-prone communities continue to suffer year after year without lasting solutions.

According to the NPP, the government’s current flood management structure has created administrative confusion by splitting responsibility between the Ministry of Local Government and the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources. The party claimed the arrangement has resulted in overlapping responsibilities and ineffective coordination.

The statement also criticised the government’s decision to assign Deputy Chief of Staff Stan Dogbe to coordinate flood response efforts, arguing that the role lacks the authority required to direct ministries during national emergencies.

The NPP further alleged that delays in the release of funds for flood mitigation projects have hampered the implementation of anti-flood measures, despite previous government announcements.

The party also rejected recent comments by President John Dramani Mahama suggesting that flooding is partly caused by citizens’ poor environmental practices, insisting that government must accept primary responsibility for planning, infrastructure and disaster management.

To address the situation, the NPP called on the President to:

  • Consolidate flood management under a single accountable ministry.
  • Appoint an empowered minister to lead national flood response efforts instead of the Deputy Chief of Staff.
  • Publish a comprehensive report on the activities, expenditures and achievements of the government’s anti-flood task force.
  • Accept responsibility for the current governance structure and implement meaningful reforms.

The party further urged government to work closely with Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies, as well as technical experts, to strengthen land-use planning, improve sanitation management and invest in resilient drainage infrastructure to reduce future flooding.

“The flooding situation is getting worse and could deteriorate further if government maintains its current approach,” the statement said.

The NPP reaffirmed its support for families affected by the floods and pledged to continue holding the government accountable for its handling of the country’s flood management efforts.
