Police Arrest Suspect in Murder of University of Cape Coast Student

The Ghana Police Service has arrested a 39-year-old suspect, Michael Mensah, in connection with the murder of Innocentia Atsufui Avinu, a student of the University of Cape Coast (UCC).

According to a police statement, the suspect was apprehended by the Inspector-General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team on Monday, 15 June 2026, at approximately 7:15 p.m. at the Pedu Lorry Station in Cape Coast following sustained intelligence-led operations.

Preliminary investigations indicate that on 11 June 2026, at about 6:48 p.m., the suspect, who claims to be a teacher but also works as a driver, allegedly picked up the deceased from Ayensu Plaza within the UCC hostel enclave. Police say he subsequently transported her to Hutchland Beach, where she was last seen.

The arrest follows ongoing investigations into the circumstances surrounding the student’s death, which sparked widespread public concern.

The Ghana Police Service says investigations are ongoing and has assured the public that further updates will be communicated as they become available.
