Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has paid tribute to the enduring legacy of the late former President Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings, describing his life and leadership as a lasting guide for ethical governance, accountability, and national development.

Speaking at a memorial lecture held in Accra in honour of the late Head of State, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said the event’s theme, “From Revolution to Fourth Republic: The Rawlings Legacy,” provided an opportunity for Ghanaians to reflect on the values that shaped the country’s democratic journey and national identity.

She noted that the ex President’ influence extended far beyond political office, highlighting his commitment to transparency, probity, accountability, patriotism, and the welfare of ordinary Ghanaians.

“President Rawlings’ legacy extends beyond the corridors of political power. His unyielding insistence on transparency, probity and accountability, his patriotism, and his unwavering commitment to the welfare of the ordinary Ghanaian are not historical relics. They remain indispensable pillars for building resilient institutions and advancing sustainable development,” she said.

The memorial lecture brought together statesmen, academics, political leaders, and supporters, with renowned legal practitioner Tsatsu Tsikata delivering the keynote address. According to the Vice President, his presentation revisited the moral principles that defined Rawlings’ public service, emphasising integrity, selfless leadership, and national interest above personal gain.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang further stated that Ghana’s Fourth Republic, widely recognised as one of Africa’s most stable democracies, reflects Rawlings’ vision and the collective sacrifices made by the nation’s democratic pioneers.

She urged citizens and leaders alike to remain committed to protecting Ghana’s democratic gains.

“Safeguarding our democracy is not a passive inheritance. It requires vigilance, courage, and an unwavering commitment to the values President Rawlings championed. The Fourth Republic we celebrate today is part of his legacy—a republic born from a call for justice, equity, and citizen empowerment,” she stated.

The Vice President also commended the organisers of the memorial lecture for creating a platform that not only honours the life of the late President but also challenges current and future leaders to uphold the highest standards of public service.

She concluded by calling on Ghanaians to draw inspiration from Rawlings’ example.

“May the memory of President Jerry John Rawlings continue to inspire every generation of leaders and citizens to place Ghana first, defend our democracy, and serve with the same fire, conviction, and selflessness that defined his life,” she said.
