Ghana kicked off their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in style, defeating Panama 1-0 in a dramatic Group L encounter thanks to a stoppage-time strike from Caleb Yirenkyi.
With England securing a 4-2 win over Croatia earlier in the day, the Black Stars knew victory was crucial to remain level at the top of the group. Despite a challenging contest, Carlos Queiroz’s men found the breakthrough at the death to claim all three points.
Panama started brightly and nearly took an early lead when Cecilio Waterman forced a superb save from Lawrence Ati Zigi in the second minute. The Central Americans continued to threaten through Christian Martinez and Jiovany Ramos, while Ghana struggled to convert their possession into clear chances.
Ghana suffered a blow before halftime as goalkeeper Ati Zigi sustained an injury and was replaced by Benjamin Asare after the break.

The Black Stars looked more dangerous in the second half, with Antoine Semenyo, Brandon Thomas-Asante, and substitute Issahaku Fatawu all creating problems for the Panama defence. Panama also remained a threat, with Martinez and Ismael Diaz going close to breaking the deadlock.
Just when the game appeared headed for a draw, Ghana struck in added time. Thomas-Asante threaded a precise pass into the box for Yirenkyi, who calmly created space before blasting his effort into the top corner to spark wild celebrations among Ghanaian supporters.
Panama pushed hard for an equaliser in the closing moments, but Benjamin Asare produced a crucial save to deny Diaz and preserve Ghana’s narrow advantage.
The victory earns Ghana three points and puts them level with England at the summit of Group L as they look ahead to their next World Cup challenge.
