The Chief of Staff, Dr. Julius Debrah, has lauded the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (GAFCSC) for its outstanding contribution to professional military education, strategic leadership, and regional security cooperation as the institution officially launched activities to commemorate its 50th anniversary.
Speaking as Guest of Honour at the golden jubilee launch held at Hamidu Hall in Teshie, Dr. Debrah described the College as a pillar of defence diplomacy and strategic scholarship, noting that it has evolved from a modest military training institution into one of Africa’s most respected centres for command and staff education.
The anniversary celebration, themed “Celebrating 50 Years of Excellence in Professional Military Education,” brought together senior military officers, government officials, former Commandants, diplomats, international alumni, and representatives of partner security institutions to celebrate the College’s remarkable legacy.

Reflecting on the institution’s journey, Commandant Major General Jackson Wunje recounted that GAFCSC was established in 1976 with an inaugural class of just 28 Ghanaian officers. Today, he said, the College has grown into a leading regional centre of excellence, producing highly skilled military leaders from across Africa and beyond.
Dr. Debrah stressed that the evolving global security environment demands continuous innovation in military education to address emerging threats such as terrorism, violent extremism, transnational organised crime, hybrid warfare, and cyber insecurity.
“Investment in professional military education remains essential to building a resilient and effective national security architecture,” he stated, reaffirming the government’s commitment to strengthening the College’s academic and institutional capacity.
He further praised GAFCSC’s expansion into postgraduate education through its Master of Science (M.Sc.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programmes in Defence, Security Studies, and Diplomacy, describing the development as a significant milestone in advancing strategic research and policy leadership.
The event also served as an opportunity for military leaders, defence experts, and international partners to recognise Dr. Debrah’s leadership and commitment to strengthening state institutions. Speakers commended his efforts to promote collaboration between government and the security services while advancing policies aimed at enhancing national stability and institutional development.
As part of its year-long golden jubilee celebrations, GAFCSC will host a series of activities, including public lectures, health walks, a commemorative luncheon with former Commandants, and a grand graduation ceremony to celebrate five decades of excellence in professional military education.
