Ghana Reaffirms Commitment to Agroecology at CIRAWA International Conference

Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting agroecological practices and building sustainable food systems as the Chief of Staff at the Office of the Vice President, Alex Segbefia, represented Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang at the opening of the CIRAWA International Conference on Agroecology and Nature-Based Solutions for Sustainable Food Systems in Africa.

Speaking on behalf of the Vice President, Mr. Segbefia delivered the keynote address and officially declared the conference open, highlighting the government’s commitment to transforming Ghana’s agricultural sector through sustainable and climate-resilient practices.

The conference brought together policymakers, scientists, researchers, development partners, and other stakeholders from across Africa to explore innovative approaches to strengthening food systems through agroecology and nature-based solutions.

Addressing participants, Mr. Segbefia said the Government of Ghana remains focused on integrating agroecological practices into its broader agricultural transformation agenda through the Feed Ghana Programme.

He stressed the need to build resilient food systems capable of addressing the challenges posed by climate change, environmental degradation, and food insecurity.

«”As we work towards resilient and sustainable food systems, we must continue to pursue approaches that restore degraded ecosystems and strengthen the resilience of the country’s food systems for present and future generations,” he added.»

On behalf of Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, Mr. Segbefia commended the organisers of the conference for creating a platform to advance dialogue on sustainable agriculture across the continent.

He expressed the Vice President’s best wishes for productive discussions and successful outcomes that would contribute to strengthening Africa’s food systems and promoting environmentally sustainable agricultural practices.

The conference is expected to generate policy recommendations and foster collaboration among governments, research institutions, and development partners to accelerate the adoption of agroecology and nature-based solutions across Africa.

Ghana’s participation underscores the government’s commitment to advancing sustainable agriculture, restoring ecosystems, and strengthening food security through the implementation of the Feed Ghana Programme and other climate-smart agricultural initiatives.
