The host of Radio1 100.7 FM’s morning show “Oman Mu Nsem,” Nana Kwabena Addo(Mr Prez on Radio), has called on the Bank of Ghana (BoG) to urgently address the growing practice of traders and members of the public rejecting Ghana’s 10, 20 and 50 pesewa coins during business transactions.
Speaking passionately on Thursday’s edition of the programme, Nana Kwabena Addo questioned when the Bank of Ghana had announced that the 10 pesewa, 20 pesewa and 50 pesewa coins were no longer legal tender.
He expressed concern that many people refuse to accept the coins despite them remaining part of Ghana’s official currency, describing the practice as unlawful and harmful to the country’s monetary system.
According to him, no individual has the authority to decide which legal tender to accept or reject unless the Bank of Ghana officially withdraws it from circulation.

“We cannot be in a country where people take the law into their own hands and do whatever they like,” he said. “If the Bank of Ghana has not withdrawn these coins, then every Ghanaian should accept them in transactions.”
Nana Kwabena Addo further appealed to the Bank of Ghana to intensify public education and enforce the law against individuals who deliberately reject the coins. He also urged citizens to report such cases to the police for appropriate action.
He stressed that rejecting legal tender is an offence under Ghana’s laws and warned that anyone who unlawfully refuses to accept Ghana’s legal currency could face legal consequences if found liable under the applicable laws.
The outspoken media personality called for immediate intervention by the Bank of Ghana to restore public confidence in the use of all Ghana cedi denominations and ensure that every legal tender remains acceptable across the country.
