The Regional Representative of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) for West Africa, Mr. Awedda Robert Kotchani, has led a delegation on a courtesy call to Ghana’s Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP) to strengthen collaboration in advancing human rights across the country.

Receiving the delegation on behalf of the Minister, Mr. Ebenezer Charway, Director of the General Administration Directorate, expressed appreciation for OHCHR’s continued partnership and reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to protecting and promoting the rights and welfare of women, children, persons with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups.

Mr. Kotchani, who was in Ghana to participate in a high-level consultative conference on the implementation of the landmark United Nations Resolution A/Res/80/250 on the transatlantic slave trade, commended the Ministry for its role in coordinating Ghana’s reporting obligations to international human rights treaty bodies.

He also reaffirmed OHCHR’s commitment to supporting advocacy efforts aimed at the ratification of the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the Sale of Children, Child Prostitution and Child Pornography, in line with Ghana’s UDHR75 pledge.

The meeting focused on strengthening national human rights mechanisms, supporting the implementation of recommendations from international human rights bodies, enhancing staff capacity, advancing child protection and gender equality initiatives, and fostering closer collaboration with other United Nations agencies to support the Ministry’s mandate.

The engagement concluded with both parties reaffirming their shared commitment to sustained cooperation and regular dialogue to advance the protection and promotion of the rights of vulnerable populations in Ghana.
