Accra, July 6, 2026 – President John Dramani Mahama has declared Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11, 2026, as National General Cleaning Days in the seven regions affected by the recent floods.
The exercise, organised under the auspices of the Post-Flood Mitigation Committee, will be held under the theme, “Our Actions, Our Future: Cleaning Ghana after the Floods.” It aims to mobilise citizens to clean their communities, protect the environment, and reduce the risk of future flooding.
The Government is calling on all Ghanaians to actively participate in what it describes as a critical national intervention to restore sanitation and strengthen flood preparedness.

President Mahama has directed all government appointees—including Ministers of State, Chief Executive Officers, Members of Parliament, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), and Heads of Public Institutions—to leave their offices and personally lead clean-up activities alongside residents in their respective communities.
Cleanup Schedule
The nationwide exercise will be conducted in two phases:
- Friday, July 10, 2026: Personnel from the security services, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), and waste management companies will begin the cleanup operations.
-
Saturday, July 11, 2026: The general public will join the security agencies and assemblies to intensify the exercise across affected communities.
Priority Areas
The exercise will focus on:
- Desilting choked drains to improve water flow ahead of the peak rainy season.
-
Sweeping and clearing sand, weeds, and debris from roads, streets, and highways.
-
Cleaning public spaces, including markets, lorry parks, recreational parks, and communal waste collection points.
The Government stressed that indiscriminate littering and plastic waste have significantly contributed to blocked drainage systems, resulting in devastating floods that have destroyed property, disrupted livelihoods, and claimed lives.
To ensure the success of the exercise, all MMDAs have been directed to work closely with waste management companies to provide essential logistics, including waste trucks, gloves, shovels, and other cleaning equipment. Assemblies have also been instructed to promptly evacuate all collected refuse and silt to prevent it from being washed back into drainage channels.
Calling for nationwide unity, the Government urged citizens to embrace the clean-up exercise as a shared responsibility.
«”Protect your home, protect your neighbour, and let us clean our beloved homeland.”»
The statement concluded with the campaign slogan: “Clean Ghana, Save Lives.”
The announcement was made in a statement signed by Hon. Felix Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications.
