ACCRA, July 5, 2026 – The Government of Ghana has extended warm congratulations and best wishes to the Government and people of the United States of America on the occasion of the country’s 250th Independence Anniversary.
In a goodwill message on behalf of the Government and people of Ghana, President John Dramani Mahama congratulated the United States on the historic milestone and reaffirmed the longstanding friendship and strategic partnership between the two nations.
Ghana and the United States have maintained cordial diplomatic relations since Ghana attained independence in 1957. The relationship was strengthened from its inception when the United States dispatched an official delegation led by then Vice President Richard Nixon to Ghana’s independence celebrations. The delegation also included renowned civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and distinguished diplomat Ralph Bunche, laying the foundation for decades of strong bilateral cooperation.

Over the past seven decades, Ghana and the United States have expanded their partnership across several sectors, with collaboration spanning governance, trade, investment, education, healthcare, and infrastructure development.
Among the landmark initiatives that have defined the bilateral relationship are the Akosombo Dam, the Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO), projects implemented under the Millennium Challenge Compact (MCC), the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), as well as continued cooperation in the social sector and strategic investments that have contributed to Ghana’s development.
The two countries have also maintained regular high-level diplomatic engagements. Ghana has hosted several U.S. Presidents, including Bill Clinton in 1998, George W. Bush in 2008, and Barack Obama in 2009. Likewise, successive Ghanaian Presidents—including Jerry John Rawlings, John Agyekum Kufuor, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and John Dramani Mahama—have undertaken official visits to the United States to strengthen bilateral cooperation.
The Government of Ghana also commended the enduring people-to-people relations between Ghanaians and Americans, describing them as a vital pillar that continues to promote cultural exchange, educational collaboration, and mutual understanding.
In his message to U.S. President Donald J. Trump, President Mahama expressed confidence that the longstanding partnership between Ghana and the United States would continue to flourish.
«”As we join in the celebration of another milestone, it is my deep conviction that the enduring friendship and cooperation between our two countries will continue to be shaped by shared values and common interests, especially in the areas of the rule of law, human rights and democracy, as well as our shared aspiration for economic prosperity, which fosters a close and enduring partnership between Ghana and the United States,” President Mahama stated.»
President Mahama concluded by wishing the Government and people of the United States a peaceful, joyous, and successful celebration of their 250th Independence Anniversary.
