Five KTU Student Hostels Temporarily Closed Over Safety and Regulatory Breaches

The Rent Control Department, in collaboration with the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, temporarily closed five hostels serving students of Koforidua Technical University (KTU) following an inspection that uncovered concerns about their accommodation conditions and compliance with regulatory requirements.

The affected hostels are Nhyira Hostel, Hallelujah Hostel, Adehyie Hostel, Serwaa Heights Hostel, and Elite Hostel.

The inspection formed part of a joint exercise aimed at ensuring that student accommodation facilities meet approved standards and provide safe, decent, and habitable living conditions for students.

According to the authorities, the exercise also sought to curb excessive rent charges, enforce compliance with licensing and regulatory requirements, and ensure hostel operators adhere to established guidelines governing student accommodation.

Officials indicated that the temporary closure of the five hostels will remain in effect until the identified issues are addressed and the facilities satisfy the required standards.

The Rent Control Department and the Ghana Tourism Authority reaffirmed their commitment to protecting the welfare of students by ensuring that all hostel operators comply with the country’s housing and hospitality regulations.

The authorities have also urged owners and managers of student hostels to regularise their operations and maintain facilities that meet the required standards to avoid similar enforcement actions in the future..
