Dean of the School of Engineering Sciences at the University of Ghana and National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) Quiz Mistress, Prof. Elsie Effah Kaufmann, has urged women to make independent decisions about marriage and motherhood without allowing societal pressure to dictate their choices.

Speaking on Today’s Woman on TV3, Prof. Kaufmann said motherhood has been an important and meaningful part of her own life, but stressed that biological motherhood should not be viewed as a requirement for every woman.

“Motherhood is why we do all the things we do. There has to be some meaning to it, and motherhood will let you know it. Not every woman should be a mother, not biologically. We can all be mothers because we have something to offer, hopefully positive. So even if they’re not your biological children, you can influence them in that way. For biological motherhood, it is a choice.”

She also maintained that women should not feel compelled to marry simply because of expectations from society.

“Not every woman should be a wife. Not at all, and it is okay to choose not to. Society will always breathe down your neck, even if you choose to be a wife. At the end of the day, what is most important is to reflect on your own life as a woman and decide that you have made choices that you’re comfortable with, not because you have been coerced or forced to please someone else. Regardless of what you do, there are people who are not going to be happy, so you might as well be at peace with yourself.”

Prof. Kaufmann encouraged young women to focus on discovering their purpose, making meaningful contributions to society and remaining committed to their goals.

“Figure out your contribution to the world, work really hard at it, and enjoy the journey.”
