Queiroz Nears New Black Stars Deal as GFA Moves to Secure Continuity

Carlos Queiroz is reportedly on the verge of extending his contract as head coach of Ghana’s senior national team after receiving strong backing from the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

The Portuguese coach took charge of the Black Stars after the departure of Otto Addo and guided Ghana to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Ghana’s campaign at the tournament ended at the Round of 32 stage following a defeat to Colombia.

Despite his success, Queiroz’s future remained uncertain after his initial four-month contract expired without an extension being agreed.

The delay was reportedly caused by outstanding payments owed to Queiroz and members of his technical team for their services during the World Cup campaign.

Those financial commitments have now reportedly been cleared by the GFA with support from the Ministry of Sports, paving the way for negotiations to be completed.

The GFA Executive Council is said to have unanimously endorsed Queiroz’s continued stay, leaving approval from the Ministry of Sports as the major outstanding step before the new contract can be finalised.

The ministry is responsible for financing the coach’s salary, and an official announcement is expected after the necessary approval is granted.

If the deal is completed, Queiroz will lead the Black Stars into the qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, with Ghana hoping to return to the continental tournament and end its long wait for an AFCON title.

Ghana is scheduled to open its qualifying campaign away to Ivory Coast on September 24, 2026, at the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké, before hosting Gambia three days later at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Queiroz’s continued presence would offer the Black Stars greater stability as they prepare for the AFCON qualifiers and build towards their 2026 World Cup campaign.
