South African Man Arrested at OR Tambo With Suspected Heroin From Ghana

A 52-year-old South African man has been arrested at OR Tambo International Airport after police allegedly found suspected heroin worth more than R2 million in his luggage.
The suspect had reportedly arrived on a flight from Accra, Ghana, on Sunday, September 20, when he was intercepted by officers during an intelligence-led operation conducted by the South African Police Service (SAPS) in collaboration with the Border Management Authority (BMA).
According to SAPS, a search of his luggage uncovered bullet-shaped objects and blocks containing substances believed to be heroin.
The estimated street value of the seized narcotics is more than R2 million. Authorities, however, said investigations are ongoing to determine the exact quantity of the drugs and whether the suspect is linked to a wider drug trafficking network.

The suspect is expected to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrates’ Court later this week to face charges related to drug smuggling.
His arrest is reportedly the third suspected drug mule bust at OR Tambo International Airport within three weeks, as South African authorities intensify efforts to prevent narcotics from being transported through the country’s major entry points.
The development comes amid increased international scrutiny of drug shipments allegedly linked to Ghana.
Following a series of reported seizures, President John Mahama has directed an inter-agency task force to investigate the cases and submit a roadmap to address drug smuggling within two weeks.
The latest arrest adds to growing concerns over international drug trafficking networks and the use of Ghana as a transit point for narcotics destined for other countries.
