A newly released commemorative US$1 coin featuring President Donald Trump has reportedly sold out on the US Mint’s website within hours of going on sale.

The special-edition coin was launched on Wednesday, September 2, as part of preparations for the United States’ 250th anniversary celebrations.

The coin features Trump’s portrait alongside the inscription “IN GOD WE TRUST.” The US Mint said the design was created to capture the “spirit, pride, and legacy” of the United States as the country approaches the historic milestone.

The coins were sold at US$61 for a roll of 25, while a bag containing 100 coins was priced at US$154.50. Within hours of the launch, however, the items were listed as “not currently in stock” on the Mint’s website.

They are also being made available through vending machines at the US Mint store in Washington, DC.

Although the coins have a distinctive golden appearance, they contain no gold. According to the US Mint, they are made up of 88.5% copper, with zinc, manganese and nickel accounting for the remaining composition.

Trump’s appearance on the coin has also revived discussion over restrictions on depicting living presidents on US currency.

US federal law prohibits the portrait of a living person from appearing on banknotes. In May, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the administration was considering a new US$250 bill featuring Trump, although legislation that would allow such a move remains stalled in Congress.

The administration has cited the example of former President Calvin Coolidge, whose portrait appeared on a commemorative half-dollar issued in 1926 to mark America’s 150th anniversary.

Officials have also pointed to the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020, which prohibits portraits of living people on the reverse side of coins but does not explicitly extend the restriction to the obverse, or heads side.

The rapid sell-out of the Trump commemorative coin is expected to fuel further interest among collectors as the United States prepares to mark its 250th anniversary.
