Care for Society Network International, CfSNI, has begun a four-day male ally training and radio advocacy initiative to promote safer workplaces for women in male-dominated trades in the Eastern Region.

The activity forms part of the SafeTrade Eastern advocacy project, implemented in partnership with World University Services of Canada (WUSC) under the EMPLOY project.

The training brought together male champions, including artisans and trade masters, from Fanteakwa South, Abuakwa North, New Juaben North and New Juaben South.

At the workshop, participants shared revealing perspectives on why women in male-dominated trades experience stereotyping, harassment and other uncomfortable situations. Discussions examined how harmful gender expectations, unequal power relations and the acceptance of inappropriate behaviour can undermine women’s safety.

The training covered sexual and gender-based violence, recognising harassment, consent, personal boundaries and the responsibilities of male allies. Participants also explored workplace codes of conduct, confidential complaint channels and referral pathways for people who experience abuse.

The approach seeks to involve men, particularly those who train and supervise apprentices, in challenging harmful practices and promoting respectful workplaces.

The team continued its advocacy through radio discussions to engage employers, apprentices, parents and community leaders.

According the Executive Director of Care for Society Network International, Mad Anita Ampofoa Amoako-Gyimah, the initiative aims to train more than 800 male allies and reach over 60,000 people through radio discussions, encouraging shared responsibility for women’s safety and equal opportunities in trades.
