Disability Is Not A Curse Don’t Hide Them In the Room – Atiwa Disability Association.

The Disability Association in Atiwa District, Atiwa Disability Association has advised Parents, Guardians and Breadwinners not to hide the Physically Challenged Persons in the room for being physically challenged isn’t a curse and doesn’t mean all is lost.

Speaking on the Susubiribi Morning Show on Radio 1 FM, 100.7MHZ, on Friday November 30, 2018 the representatives of the the Association, Mr Justice Yeboah popularly known as Paa Kwao, the Secretary and Dr Kwame Asiedu, Vice Chairman of the Association equally bemoaned the decision by a majority of Ghanaians who tend to hide their Children or relatives after finding out they are physically challenged.

According to the Association’s Representatives, being disabled isn’t a curse in that one should feel shy and that doesn’t also mean the person is incapable. They revealed that they have encountered such decisions for so long and they would use tge World Disability Day, slated for 3rd December 2018, to educate the public on the need not to hide them in their rooms to dissociate them from the able ones.

The Association told the host, Captain Kofi Wusu that even as they are disabled, there are a host of them doing their own work to put food on the table and also some of the members of the association have been able to school their wards in through the Universities Ghana and abroad.

However, they appealed to the public once again stigmatization is deepening the distances already created between the ables and the disables. They said some people do not even want their clothes to touch the disables especially when sitting in Car. Some Drivers also deliberately avoid those in wheel chairs and that is very worrying.

They appealed to Ghanaians that anyone can be physically challenged and therefore calls for respect for each other. They also advised the government to consider the disables in their decision makings and also reconsider them when building any social amenities because they also use the amenities. They used the opportunity to tell all those disabled not to lose hope and also register in their association to help them realise their goals.

The 3rd of December which marks their day, according to them would be used to organise a grand durbar at Anyinam where a lot of dignitaries would grace the occasion.
