PEACE COUNCIL ADVISES ELECTORAL COMMISSION

The National Peace Council has urged the Electoral Commission to assist the disqualified presidential candidates in making the necessary corrections on their nomination forms.
The chairman of the council, Rev. Prof Emmanuel Asante wants the commission to desist from behaviours that would be seen as deliberate attempt to get some candidates off the ballot paper.

He believed that the ruling of the Supreme Court should bring finality especially in respect of the presidential candidates who were disqualified because they have been given opportunity to make the needed corrections and resubmit their forms.

Some of the 13 disqualified presidential candidates have blamed the commission for failing to point out the errors on their forms which were the basis for their disqualification.

The General Secretary of the Progressive Peoples Party (PPP), Murtala Mohammed lamented lack of cooperation on the part of the EC.
He said the commission refused to show them areas on the forms that require corrections. However, the EC keeps increasing the number of errors on the forms.
For instance PPP’s errors jumped from 1 to 105, PNC increased to 103.

Meanwhile the presidential candidate for All Peoples Congress, (APC), Hassan Ayariga has threatened to go back to court if the EC fails to help him make the right corrections.

Rev. Prof. Asante pleaded with the Commission to do its best to ensure the ruling is carried out fair without favour.

‘My advice first of all to the Electoral Commission is very simple. They have a responsibility to ensure that the grounds is leveled’, he said.
