The past week has seen the FDA face many questions on the edibility of rice on the market, especially after some videos on social media claimed plastic rice are being sold to Ghanaians. However, speaking at a press conference on Friday, Mrs Darko revealed that laboratory tests so far conducted by the FDA have shown that “there is currently no plastic rice on the market”.
She added that the FDA will still be monitoring the situation to make sure that only healthy foods are sold to Ghanaians. “The Authority appreciates the role of the general public and the media in sharing information on the rumoured ‘plastic’ rice on the Ghanaian market,” the FDA statement noted.
Addressing a press conference Friday June 23, 2017, the CEO of the FDA Mimi Darko noted the tests proved the supposed plastic rice were authentic rice with a higher starchy content. She also added that there is no plastic egg in the country as been circulated on social media. Adding that, they did checks on those eggs and they found out to be rotten eggs.
She said “there is currently no plastic rice on the market” and the FDA is monitoring the situation in partnership with the international community.
